Welcome to the NYS AHEC Scholars Program!
Thank you for your interest and participation in the new NYS AHEC Scholars Program! You, along with several interdisciplinary students across New York State, are the first cohort to participate in this two-year long academic program. Designed to provide current health professional students with community-learning opportunities in underserved and medically disadvantaged areas, you will identify the root causes of select clinical and social complexities, and propose potential solutions to reduce the over-utilization of emergency room visits and hospitalizations for a core group of patients. As you progress through the program, you will support patients in achieving their optimal health while gaining valuable knowledge about current hot topic issues in healthcare, such as culturally competent care, interprofessional collaboration, and patient-centric models of care. Moreover, your participation supports the enhancement of a highly qualified and capable workforce ready to implement today’s healthcare reform efforts of better health, better care, and better value for underserved communities struggling with health disparities.

Directions:
The following table lists all of the modules that comprise the AHEC Scholars Year 1 Course. These modules are available completely online in asynchronous format (meaning that there is not a set time that you must log in each week). Each module can be completed on your time and at your own pace. With the exception of the first four modules, you do not need to complete the modules in the order they are listed. To read through the content of each module, please click on the module links found in the table below. Within each module, you will find a series of topics. Please refer to the directions within each topic and review all content, including embedded videos and links to documents or external sources, including articles, websites, etc.
If asked to view a video within any module, you are able to access the clip directly on the page by clicking on the “Play” button.
Several modules contain additional resources including articles, reports, and videos related to the topic at the bottom of the page. You are encouraged to review these additional resources, although their completion is a not a mandatory component of this course.
Navigation within Modules:
After reviewing the content within each module and topic, please click on the “Mark Complete” button found at either the bottom or top of each page. This will help track your progression through the course. Please note that certain topics require uploaded assignments. All topics that require assignments will not be marked complete until they have been approved by AHEC Staff.
You may also flip between modules and topics by using the sidebar navigation found on the right side of each module and topic page. If, at any time, you wish to return to this home page, you may click on the link “Return to AHEC Scholars” found at the bottom of the sidebar on each module and topic page.
